America's Next Top Model Allstars winner Lisa D'amato just released the music video for her song "WHIPLASH" featuring Loco Ninja and produced by the Cataracs. Animation concepts and design were done by myself, with all of the animation and editing production done at Comic Fiction. Thanks, Lisa the opp to work on the project.

50s Home Layout and Aging Tests

Below are some test layouts and aging test for the 50s inspired animation project I'm working on.

This is the pencil sketch of the background being used as reference for the bike rider animation while the background was being outlined, colored and finalized.

While in the process of finalizing the house and the cityscape, some tests were done to age the animation footage using the bike rider and pieces of the background. I turned the color footage to sepia tone, then added some film grain, used vignette to darken and blur the corners.

Another test aging the footage while in color. Added some film grain, dust and artifacts, soft focus, and gave it a bad tv resolution.

So I went back to the drawing board and attemted to edit the flick down to what I thought would be a reasonable run time. After a little bit (little bit equalling a few weeks or so) I got a shorter product. How much shorter? Well... A whole TWO MINUTES shorter. Remarkable I know, self indulgence at its finest. Things that I took out, I ended up putting back in, using different takes that were sligtly shorter. But there's some more post poduction steps I have to take to make the film whole and my hope is during that process some more cutting will take place. Or it will be longer. Whatever. I'm hoping now just to be shorter than Peter Jackson's "King Kong," which I think can be accomplished.

Where to Begin...

Been a bit so let's go back. All the way back to the end of June 2008, that's when we wrapped principle photography on the flick. Originally we were looking to end shooting mid June, but due to some work obligations, weather, and scheduling, we extended the shooting a few weeks. So, from July till now, I've been in post production. By late November I had a 1 hour and 52 minute rough cut. This was sans the opening and the closing, pushing it to a possible 2 hour and 5 minute piece.

In all honesty, I thought I'd be lucky if we got an 80 minute flick. Two hours feels bloated to me. Not the actual movie itself, but the sound of a TWO HOUR flick. It doesn't seem like this type of film should be that long. Anyway, I'm back at editing again. My hope is to get it down to 1 hour and 50 minutes total. So far, I've pulled about 7 minutes out, so I got a little ways to go. It's what I get for writing a script that constantly references earlier events, making it difficult to cut things, because some scenes would make no sense without earlier tidbits.

The Windy City, Errrrrrrrrr, GR, MI

I didn't realize how windy Grand Rapids, Mi could get until I tried to shoot some exteriors and conversation scenes outside this past weekend. Not much of the footage is usable, not when your actors are constantly squinting from the never ending barrage of wind and debris. Hopefully, it won't be as bad when we try it again. We shot some scenes at the JW Marriott Hotel, this weekend. Some scenes took longer than others to shoot (kissing scenes can take a while, especially when you don't where to put your tongue). All kidding aside, it went very well and luckily for the budget and the actors we won't have to shoot there again, I hope.

Wanna first send a quick thank you to the good folks at Four Friends Coffee House, for letting us shoot there this past week. All I gotta say about the experience is, it's a good thing we only had two scenes there. We filmed while the place was still open and while it was supposed to be a slow night, of course it wasn't. Trying to say your lines while someone is making a smoothis can be difficult. Oh, and I'd also like to thank the jerk that kept turning on their car alarm every time we stepped out of the coffee shop, hope screwing us up made your day. Anyway, we got through, shouldn't have to re-shoot anything (fingers crossed).

Yo. Filming rolls on, even without a complete cast. Still looking for a few characters, but nothing that will stop production (yet). Had a few auditions this weekend, thank you to everyone that came in. Definitely going use a few people (you know who you are.) New photos from the last few weeks are up. The shoots have gone really well. The cast has been great and gracious. Still hoping to wrap principle photography by mid June. Keeping the fingers crossed.

"That is correct, sir!" Comic Fiction is in production on it's first feature length live action movie, "Movie Logic 101." It's got action, adventure, excitement, laughs, and cries. Well, considering it's supposed to be a comedy, maybe not too much crying. We will be in production on the film for the next few months and I'll try to keep up with the news and happenings on the set while we're shooting. The flick was written and is being directed by me (Myron A. Stanley, if you couldn't remember whose blog this is). It's a comedic look at careers, relationships, and the choices we make...

Really, that's what it's about.

Oh yeah... I almost forgot. And there is something in there about hot vampire chicks, but no one will be interested in that aspect of the film.

Been Too Long

Wow! Been way too long since this has been updated. Got alot to update too. Let's start with episode two of Paper Sack Brown.

This isn't the originally intended second episode, had to do a retake of the voice work on that, that one will end up being episode four. Stay tuned for that.

The Comic Fiction website has been redesigned (again). This one should stick around for at least a few months.

So, the new design is done. From its initial sketches, to its first design, to the current. Now, I have to animate the thing, or at least see how it translates. So I threw together a cape and hair move, with some stuff happening around him. Please do excuse the video garbage that pops up.

From his first design concepts, Bartz the Blue had a cape. He wasn't designed to be without it. Another reason a redesign was necessary, I wanted his outfit to work with or without his cape and I didn't feel this design did.

Redesign In "BLUE"

In the midst of everything else that's going on, I am in the middle of redesigning some of the characters in "Bue Dragon Blues." Not that I don't like their current designs, I just think some of them could be pushed a little more. Let's start with the main character Bartz the Blue.

First off, his design needed a little more to it. It had nice elements but that felt flat to me over time. I also felt there needed to be more consistency in his outfict overall. I added a knee pad and made a new belt buckle similar in design. Here are 2 of the more finished looks of this.

I was fine with the additions, but I also wanted the character to look younger and the design to be pushed a little more to a "cartoony" feel. This was more final.

i was just gonna do robin, but i like the crazy batman in the first sketch, so i went ahead and sketched a version of that up.

Here's a quick walkthru of my drawing process with Digital Webbing's "Girl Wonder" redesign going on in the "Draw Off" section.

here's my beginning scratches, working out design. i usually draw a basic form and throw all types of ideas on it, there's multiple "r" placements, different types of boots goin' on. i have to squint alot to block out some aspects, but i get a whole bunch of crap happening.

from that, i take what i want and leave the rest. went from four pouches to two, got rid of the boots, no knee pads, still messing around with the "r" placement.

then i'll play with that simplified design, still working out elements. love the "r" on the bottom of the foot, i can see that imprinted on someone's head after a kick to the face.

keeping what i want, i draw the more detailed sketch, but this will change some once i outline it...

I drew a redesigned version of the Wonder Twins for Comic World News a while back, but I had to see them transform into something, so I did a little Flash movie you can see below.

The same goes for a Mazinger Z. There was a Mazinger Z/Giant Robot Draw Off over at Digital webbing, and I couldn't draw the robot without showing him do his signature rocket punch.
